NORTHAMPTON — The former St. John Cantius Church needs roof, gutter and exterior brickwork repairs, but the building retains its historic character and its internal framing is in good condition, according to the developers who own the property.

O’Connell Development Group of Holyoke submitted a 46-page historic structure study in an effort to get $500,000 in Northampton Community Preservation Act funding for a $4.6 million rehab project. O’Connell says it wants to convert the 6,000-square-foot St. John Cantius at 10 Hawley St. into housing.

The company didn’t respond to emails and phone messages Tuesday. But executives will detail their plans at a Zoom teleconference meeting of the Northampton Historical Commission at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 8. A link to the meeting can be found on the commission’s website at northamptonma.gov.
